More feeder heifer prices reported by Canfax, but data for feeder steers are still limited

All but one feeder heifer weight category had prices to report on in Saskatchewan, while the feeder steer side was limited to two categories.

They highlighted the latest Canfax Cattle Market Update for the week ending February 2. The 400-500lb feeder steer category averaged $423.25 per cwt with prices ranging between $412 and $488, and the 500-600lb steers averaged $401.67 per cwt with prices ranging from $384 to $437. For feeder heifers, only the 300-400lb category did not have an average price reported; the rest can be seen in the chart below.

Markets picked up last week, as 12,676 feeder cattle in the province were marketed, up from 6,603 reported the previous week. The current volume of cattle marketed is slightly below the 14,068 head of cattle marketed in the February 3, 2023 report.

Fonda Froats, a Provincial Cattle Specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, says the feeder market remains strong, benefiting from positive cattle futures and lower feed prices. The limited supply of feeder cattle is creating competition which in turn is helping the lighter weight feeder cattle.

Canfax noted Alberta cow prices were mixed last week; the price of D2 slaughter cows averaged $130.20 per cwt, which was up $2.87 over the previous week. The price of D3 slaughter cows was down $3.35 from the previous week to average $111.13 per cwt. The price for Alberta fed steers was $217.50 per cwt for the week ending February 2.
