The Indian government is under domestic pressure to end the duty-free period on imported yellow peas.

Right now, Canada can sell yellow peas to India duty-free until the end of March.

That extension was announced a few months ago.

However, a published report in India says the Pulses and Grains Association is pushing for a 30 to 50 percent duty to protect domestic farmers in India.

A spokesman says the duties are needed because of expected higher production of yellow peas in both Canada and Russia.

He is anticipating an announcement from the Indian government as early as this week.

Canada is in a difficult position with China having already imposed a 100 percent duty on Canadian yellow peas.

A 30 to 50 percent duty by India, which is Canada's other main customer, would be a big blow for growers with peas.
