ESTEVAN — The annual Estevan Rotary 4-H Regional Show and Sale once again had excellent support from the community.
The sale was held July 3 at the Estevan Exhibition Association's grounds. The 39 steers that were available attracted a large crowd. Members of the Steelman, Outram-Madigan, Browning, Crossroads and Benson 4-H clubs participated.
Rowyn Shier from the Steelman club had the grand champion steer. The 1,470-pound red animal sold for $7 per pound to Josh Biggs from Top Torque.
The reserve champion steer was raised by Payton Adderley, also from the Steelman club. The 1,365-pound animal sold for $5 per pound to Frehlick Farms.
The rest of the steers were sold after the grand and reserve champions. The average sale price was $4.81 per pound.
Carolyn Chaytors from the Crossroads 4-H Club said it was a wonderful day.
"It ran really smooth. Everybody contributed to getting the show up and going, and it was just beautiful with the camaraderie and the sportsmanship. I thought it was wonderful … and it was nice to see everybody come out and support us. It was a hot day but we made it through."
The show enjoyed lots of support from 4-H alumni and long-time supporters, as well as people who are new to 4-H.
"It was just wonderful to see everybody," said Chaytors. The support going into the show beforehand with all of the prizes and the people that were there, it was really nice," said Chaytors.
All of the youths put in a "tremendous" amount of work to get their cattle ready, she said.
The show and sale day kicked off with judging the cattle. The 4-H members were also evaluated for the strength of their grooming skills, stall maintenance and more. Awards were presented before the sale.
Among the other winners were Brendan Lischka (grand champion yearling heifer), Payton Adderley (reserve champion yearling heifer), Montana Sernick (grand champion continuation female), Shier (reserve champion continuation female). Sernick also won for the overall supreme champion female, with Lischka as the reserve champion, while Shier had the top home-grown steer, while Lexus Zieglgansberger won for the reserve champion.
The Steelman Club won for the best group of five steers and team grooming. The Outram-Madigan 4-H Club won for the best-kept stalls. Shier (overall judging), Cayden Lischka (overall showmanship) and Turner Petterson (4-H Motto) also won awards.
Chaytors said they had a lot of awards and sponsors this year.
The Steelman club held an achievement day on July 1, while the Outram-Madigan club held a similar event the following day.
Mack Auction conducted this year's auction, and the Steelman Club made a special presentation to auctioneer Norm Mack for his support over the years.
Chaytors thanked everyone who donated and sponsored, and said the show wasn't possible to have the sale without everybody's support.
