Harvest inching closer to 100 per cent complete

Harvest is basically done in Saskatchewan, as progress is at 97 per cent complete.

Producers in the southwest are done; the southeast and west-central are wrapping up at 98 per cent, and farmers in the east-central, northeast and northwest regions are in the homestretch at 93 per cent.

Crops that are in the bin are winter cereals, triticale, field pea, lentil, durum, mustard and chickpeas. Almost done are spring wheat, barley and canary seed, and oats is nearly harvested at 96 per cent and canola at 94 per cent; and flax and soybeans are the furthest behind with flax at 88 per cent harvested and soybeans at 77 per cent harvested.

Some areas got rain which slowed things down for a few producers. The Arbourfield and Wroxton areas had the most rainfall at 32 mm. Lake Lenore had 28 mm and Star City 26. In the northwest, the Glaslyn area had 31 mm of precipitation, followed closely by the Meota area at 26 mm, North Battleford 25, Rosthern area 22, Duck Lake 20, and both the Spruce Home and Turtleford areas got 19 mm of rain.

The rain helped maintain soil moisture levels for crop land, hay land, and pasture land and producers are hoping for more before winter arrives. The crop report also notes winter feed supplies, which includes hay, straw, silage, greenfeed, and grain feed, are mostly adequate.

There wasn’t much crop damage reported as we’re nearing the end of harvest, but producers did note extensive shelling damage to standing canola and oats from the strong winds that occurred over the weekend. Producers also noted the continued presence of migratory birds, but damage is minimal
