Bill exempting fuel used for grain drying, heating barns from carbon tax, inching closer to becoming law

Bill C-234 is one step closer to becoming law.

During a full senate session on Tuesday afternoon, efforts to tack on amendments to the bill failed by a margin of 42-28.

Those senators that pushed to have the bill remain in its original form broke into applause following the vote.

Senator David Wells, who initially sponsored the bill in the upper chamber tried to move to give third and final reading of the original bill immediately, but that motion failed.

It will come up for third and final reading at the senate’s next meeting.

Edmonton senator Paula Simons who favored the amendment at the committee level, abstained from Tuesday’s vote.
